Michigan auto insurers have sent out $3.04 billion in refunds, according to a news release from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
The insurance companies were required to send the $400-per-vehicle refunds by May 9, via either check or direct deposit.
If you have not received your refund yet, the state says to reach out to your auto insurer. Causes for delay could include incorrect banking or address information, according to the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS).
If you can’t reach a resolution with your insurance company, call DIFS at 833-ASK-DIFS (833-275-3437) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or file a complaint at Michigan.gov/DIFScomplaints.

All Michiganders with an auto insurance policy as of Oct. 31, 2021, are eligible for the one-time refund of $400, or an $80 refund for historic vehicles. People who have not received their refund should contact whoever their insurer was as of Oct. 31 – that is who the refund should be coming from.
The money comes via the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) catastrophic fund, which has saved $5 billion since Whitmer signed a bill that changed Michigan’s auto insurance rules. The law allows auto insurers to reduce how much they must pay for health care services for auto crash victims.
It has also saved Michigan drivers $1 billion on premiums since the law took effect in 2019, Whitmer said.
“As we move past the end of the refund process, we will continue to use every tool in our toolbox to help put money back into the pockets of Michiganders,” Whitmer said in the release.
The extra $2 billion remaining will go toward ensuring care for auto crash survivors, Whitmer said.
